SpyBuddy monitoring software review

SpyBuddy and SpyBuddy Pro are 2 programs from ExploreAnywhere Software who have a range of PC monitoring tools. In terms of monitoring children then I think that SpyBuddy Pro is probably your best bet. It has all the same features of the SpyBuddy program but is simpler to setup. The biggest complaint levelled against SpyBuddy is that every option requires configuration and that perhaps some options are a little beyond computer lamens. With SpyBuddy Pro all this is taken care of making it a good monitoring solution for those less tech savvy. SpyBuddy contains a number of PC monitoring features including, keylogging, application monitoring and websites visited. Special attention is also paid to instant chat programs such as MSN Chat, AOL, and ICQ. For concerned parents the ability to monitor instant chat is a great feature.

That said SpyBuddy does have a few issues. For a start the normal SpyBuddy non Pro version can be a pain to configure. Secondly SpyBuddy can be run hidden, hiding it from the list of installed applications and even the Task Manager. Whilst some may see this as a positive (stopping people from stopping it!) you should remember that no software is infallable. What happens if the program has a problem, there is no way of ending the task, the whole point of the task manager? No software developer would ever recommend hiding a task from the task manager, no matter for what end. It's a difficult balance between being "hidden" and running within the rules of the operating system, maybe SpyBuddy has gone too far the other way?

As mentioned above SpyBuddy has a long feature set, some of the most important features are listed below:-

  • Record of Websites Visited
  • E-mail Reporting

In summary I'd say that SpyBuddy and SpyBuddy Pro are good applications and capable of providing a comprehensive monitoring solution. I'd warn though that they are maybe more technically challenging than some of the other solutiuons out there that I've seen.

System Requirements

SpyBuddy requires a Microsoft Windows based PC running Windows 98 through to Windows XP. Unless I hear differently SpyBuddy doesn't appear to work on Windows Vista.
